Current Research Projects  -  Mark Purdey

1. Questionaire/sampling of BSE farms and CJD clusters in Japan

2. Questionnaire/sampling of vCJD clusters in the UK

3. Sampling and investigation of a novel progressive dementia amongst Aboriginal population living around manganese mines on Groote Eylandt island off NE Australia.

Several field study projects are now planned for the next six months. Whilst analyses for the usual range of metals will be carried out in all of the cluster regions that I will be visiting, long term levels of infrasound (from 5 to 20 Hertz) will also be analysed in the TSE clusters as well as the TSE - free adjoining localities for controls.

SEPTEMBER

Study of clusters of chronic wasting disease, CJD and scrapie planned for hotspot regions in Wisconsin (CWD), Colorado (CWD), Staten island/Long island (CJD), and Texas (Scrapie ). Lectures will also be given at several locations during this study tour.

OCTOBER

a. Study of clusters of scrapie in Sardinia.
b. Study of former Kuru cluster region in Papua New Quinea.

NOVEMBER

Study of the intensive application of maneb fungicide in relation to an exclusive high incidence cluster of early onset Parkinson's disease/Multiple sclerosis confined to a farming community (2 out of 3 farmers affected) spanning 25 square miles of early potatoe growing land in the UK.

SPRING - 2003

Ecodetective analytical excursions have been planned to the following
cluster locations for 2003;

Febuary - The Azores.
March - The Yemeni Mountains.
April (Ist half) - Japan.
April (2rd half) May - Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Wisconsin TSE cluster
regions and Vermont TSE-free region.
August - Chile, S America.

May 10th 2003 - Field trip to study excessive cluster of MS ( 60 cases ) in a
suburban vicinity around the former Weymouth US naval airbase, near Boston in Massachusetts.

May 11th 2003 - Field trip to study the cluster of machado-joseph disease in
Portugese immigrants around the Fall River district of Massachusetts.

June 2003 - Field trip to the Orkney/Shetland/Westray/Faroe island clusters of multiple sclerosis planned.

November 2003 - Field trip to study the excessive cluster of Alzheimer, Motor
Neurone, Parkinson and Multiple sclerosis cluster on Isle of Guam, South Pacific.

LABORATORY STUDY

A laboratory study is underway looking at the effect of infrasonic vibrational shock on trivalent manganese prion protein cell cultures.

Spectroscopy studies are also being set up to make a comparative analyses between topsoils that have been exposed to high intensity infrasonic shock over many years duration and similar types/grades of topsoil that are relatively free of infrasonic challenge. The magnetic status of these soils is also being compared.
